News / Ingress Protection – What is IP65?

Achieve the required protection for your application

Ingress protection, also referred to as IP, is the International Protection ratings code which is defined to the international standard of EN 60529 (BS EN 60529:1992 and European IEC 60509:1989).

This code classifies the degree of protection provided by enclosures, including light fittings, against accidental contact (body parts such as hands and fingers), the entering of solid objects, dust and by liquid into a luminaire. The code is intended to provide an easy to understand guide on the level of protection provided from a light fitting and is split into two digits:

The first digit – relates to the degree of protection against solid objects and dust.

The second digit – relates to the degree of protection against harmful ingress of liquid.

Industrial applications tend to be more demanding and usually require a higher degree of protection from the chosen luminaires, this is to ensure that they perform effectively and provide a long life.

IP65 refers to an ingress protection rating of:

6

Dust tight

Impossible for dust to enter and complete protection against any foreign body

5

Water jets

Protected against water projected by a nozzle (6.3mm)  from any direction

Gamma provide a range of luminaires which are protected to IP65 and are ideal for environments such as bathrooms, wet rooms, laundry facilities and under-canopy locations, where dust and moisture pose a threat to luminaires and their wiring.

Our IP65 luminaires are independently tested in the UK and are guaranteed to provide total protection against dust and safeguard luminaires from the ingress of water.
