Rudding Park Phase 2

Follifoot Wing

Rudding Park Hotel is a privately owned Grade 1 listed Regency building, set in mature gardens and parkland. It is an exclusive conference, banqueting centre, hotel, spa and golf course and is widely known as Yorkshire's Premier Hotel and Golf Resort.

The hotel recently added the impressive new 48 room Follifoot Wing and as part of that installed LED lighting throughout, reducing the hotel lighting energy bills by over 75%, making it probably one of the greenest hotels in the UK. The lighting was designed by Litetask in conjunction with Wetherby consultants MRB and used the very latest LED lighting technology from Gamma Illumination. Mark McDonnell, from Litetask managed the lighting project in conjunction with John Blanchard from MRB who liaised with client, manufacturer and designers.

John Blanchard: "MRB was appointed as part of a design team by Rudding Park as building services consultant with design responsibility for the majority of the mechanical and electrical services. Rudding park provides their guests with an exceptional quality service and their brief to the design team was to produce a building which reflected their own quality standards and incorporating low energy design features where economically viable. Lighting design was undertaken in conjunction with the client and their architects. Lighting design focussed on selecting luminaires with clean lines, excellent colour rendering and white light. Gamma Illumination helped MRB carry out payback analysis of LED lighting when compared with both low voltage and compact fluorescent fittings and the Syncro M range was selected for its ability to satisfy all of the above criteria."

In the initial stages of the LED lighting design, the biggest objection to overcome was past experience of harsh bluey-white lighting and premature luminaire failures from other manufacturers. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of their own luminaires and to allay the client's fears of poor performance, Gamma Illumination fitted out a sample bedroom in the hotel free of charge.

The result was a great success. All parties were convinced that with the correct lighting designer, and a reputable manufacturer, LED was, without doubt, the route to meet the clients initial requirements for energy efficiency, building regulation compliance, maintenance free, good colour rendition, 5 year warranty, dimming and aesthetic appeal.

General ambient corridor lighting was achieved by using the Gamma 18W Sysion RE 1100 LED downlight, with an outstanding efficacy of up to 54.0 lumens per circuit watt, surpassing the requirements of Building Regulations Parts L1 and L2.

The Gamma 7W Syncro, with a 24 degree beam, was utilised in the corridors to detail doors and artwork. The Syncro’s use of Cree XP-E technology translates into great colour rendering, and 535 lumen output at 3000k, and efficacy of up to 64.0 luminaire lm/W

In the bedrooms, to create more subtle mood lighting, the Gamma Syncro luminaire with a wider 54 degree beam angle was installed, with the 24 degree luminaires highlighting certain features.

Gamma company ethos is "making perfect sense". For Rudding Park an LED lighting design and installation "made perfect sense", as it met all the requirements of the clients brief, and overcame their initial misconceptions about LEDs.
